The most happening news that brings joy and pride to everyone here is that for the first time, a T20 cricket match is coming to Trivandrum. On November 7th, 2017, Trivandrum International Stadium (a.k.a Greenfield Stadium, Sportshub, Kariyavattam Stadium, TIS) is hosting the match India vs New Zealand. It is after a long wait of 29 years, international cricket is returning to Trivandrum. The last match that the capital city had witnessed was between India and West Indies way back in 1988.

The BCCI (The Board of Control for Cricket in India) had initially planned to conduct the T20 match in Cuttack, Odisha. And, TIS was offered a chance during the India vs Sri Lanka series later this December. But due to the clash in dates with Puri Beach Festival, the venue for India vs New Zeland match was changed to Trivandrum International Stadium (TIS).

So where exactly is this match happening?

Well, it is in our own multi-purpose 50K seater Trivandrum International stadium here at Karyavattom, Trivandrum. It has space of over 37 acres with completely integrated sports and leisure complex (The Sports Hub), the first of its kind in India. With facilities galore, TIS has indirectly become a good rival to the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi. The Kerala Cricket Association took over the TIS from the Kerala Football Association to prepare the ground for IPL and other One-Day Internationals. So in 2016 KFA conducted India Vs Afghanistan football match with grand success at the TIS, with a whopping 40K strong cheering crowd. A similar crowd can be expected for the T20 match also.

One guess we can safely make is, now that the cricket association has taken over the Trivandrum International Stadium, if at all there is cricket happening in Kerala it is gonna be TIS for some time in the near future. So, like every good-samaritan Trivandrumite, we sincerely hope that we attract more and more cricket to our city.

How did we get the ICC approval?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) team headed by Javagal Srinath, inspected the stadium early in the month of August 2017. Thanks to the international standards at the Greenfield stadium, the ICC gave us a thumbs up. In the interview, Srinath made a minor, rectifiable remark about the maturity of the pitch. But later, he said as more and more matches happen, the pitch will eventually mature. We are yet to see what all facilities are waiting for the fans and locals here at the base.
